Choosing a Breeder

You have researched breeds, read about traits, and looked at photos . . . what now?  Now it is time to locate a breeder.

Here are a few commonly asked questions:

  • How do I find a breeder?
  • How can I tell if he/she is reputable?
  • What are some signs of a poor breeder?

One of the best ways to find a breeder is by Googling the key term "Pocket Beagles". This will give you a wide range of breeders. Please beware though this method could give you an ethical breeder but it could also have results for unethical breeders as well. Just for rule of thumb--breeder listings that appear at the top of the results page have a larger amount of traffic, have been established longer, as well as typically offer more information.

Sadly enough as with most everything today there are breeders that are dishonest and/or do not disclose all of the information about their dogs. Avoid breeders that offer "so called" unique colored Pocket Beagles such as:

  • Dapple
  • Double Dapple
  • Pied

These are out of standard colors for the beagle breed and should be an instant red flag for poor quality, mixed breed dogs.

Communication is the key to determining if the breeder that you have found is ethical. In searching for one of these small hounds visit with the breeder and confirm that the dogs you are speaking about are purebred and that there is not any other breed in that dogs genetic make-up. The new "trend" out is for unethical breeders to cross beagles with daschunds and other small breeds in order to create a smaller dog that can be passed off as a Olde English Pocket Beagle. Cross breeding with daschunds and other breeds can introduces new health conditions and defects.

Make sure that the breeder is familiar with Pocket Beagle breed standards this includes both color and size.  Be sure to question the breeder on owning both the mother and father of dog that you are interested in purchasing. Another common practice is that breeders are selling puppies on their sites that they have never even seen. They are neither familiar with the conditions that the puppies are being raised in nor do they know about the dogs health history.

When looking for the perfect Olde English Pocket Beagle be sure to investigate the breeder's site in its entirety. The breeders often offer a lot of very helpful information and frequently asked questions & answers on their sites.
